When a Fire Stick or Roku helps, when your smart TV is enough, and cable basics.

A streaming stick is not magic. It is an app computer for a TV that lacks the apps you want, or runs them too slowly.
Do you need one?
If your TV already has Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and Disney+ and they feel snappy, you may not need a stick.
Buy a stick when the built-in OS is abandoned, slow, or missing a service you pay for.
4K vs HD
4K sticks need a 4K TV and solid internet. An HD stick is fine for older panels. Upselling 4K Max features does nothing for a 1080p living-room set.
Ecosystem and remotes
Fire TV leans into Amazon’s store. Roku is simpler for some households. Chromecast/Google TV fits Android homes.
Budget for a known-good HDMI cable and a place the remote will not vanish. See our TV and streaming category for named options.
