How Amazon’s deal labels differ, what “clip coupon” actually does, and how to avoid fake markdown theater.

Amazon uses several deal languages at once. Shoppers treat every orange or green badge as the same discount. They are not. Knowing the difference keeps you from rushing a bad buy or missing a real one.
Clip coupons
A coupon is usually a seller or brand offer you must clip (or apply) while signed in. Until you clip it, the strikethrough math on the page may not match what you pay.
Coupons can be limited per account, expire, or vanish when stock changes. After you clip, confirm the discount line still appears on the checkout review page.
Coupons are not promo codes you type. If a site asks you to paste a random “Amazon code,” be skeptical. FinchFile does not invent codes.
Lightning Deals
Lightning Deals are time- and quantity-limited offers. They can sell out, change price, or end while you compare reviews. The claimed list price next to a Lightning Deal is not always a price you ever paid.
If a Lightning Deal is almost claimed, decide fast only if you already did the homework. Impulse wins for Amazon’s clock, not for your closet.
Percent off and “was” prices
A big % off badge can still be a soft deal if the “was” price was inflated. Compare the live price to what you would pay at a known retailer, or to the typical street price you remember for that item.
Subscribe & Save discounts stack differently than one-time Lightning pricing. Read whether the lower price requires recurring delivery you will actually keep.
Today’s Deals boards
Amazon’s deal walls are huge and noisy. Use them to browse, then open a specific product and verify coupon, shipping, seller, and returns. A wall badge is not a product review.
Our Deals page on FinchFile starts with curated picks so you are not dropped into Amazon’s entire board first. Live markdowns still only exist on Amazon.
Quick checklist before you buy
Signed in? Coupon clipped? Final price on the order review screen? Seller and ship-from clear? Return window acceptable? If any answer is no, pause.
